Flossing with Braces: Tips from Edge Orthodontics in Provo, Utah

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential when undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces. Flossing can be a bit more challenging with braces, but it’s crucial to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth and braces to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. In this blog post, Edge Orthodontics in Provo, Utah will provide tips on how to floss with braces.

Choose the Right Floss

Choosing the right floss is essential for effective flossing with braces. We recommend using waxed floss, as it is less likely to get stuck in your braces. You can also use floss threaders or interdental brushes to help you get between the wires and brackets.

Start with a Long Piece of Floss

Start with a long piece of floss, around 18 inches, and thread it under the wire of your braces. Hold the floss tightly between your thumb and index finger and gently slide it up and down between your teeth. Be sure to get the floss all the way down to the gumline, and don’t forget to floss behind the back teeth.

Use a New Section of Floss for Each Tooth

After flossing one tooth, unwind a new section of floss from your fingers and move on to the next tooth. Using a fresh section of floss for each tooth will prevent the spread of bacteria and ensure that each tooth is properly cleaned.

Rinse with Mouthwash

Rinsing with mouthwash can help kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Choose a mouthwash that is alcohol-free to avoid irritation and dryness.

Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are important when you have braces to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy. Be sure to schedule regular appointments with your dentist and orthodontist to keep your teeth and braces in top condition.
